Politics is a very cynical game about power. The career politician uses a cynical war machine – euphemistically called ‘campaign apparatus’ – to reach goals and set objectives. Other politicians go even further than that and simply use the dirtiest tricks available.
In general, it can be said that a politician – wherever he or she is on this planet – is at all times forced to build a power base. To do that, the politician needs to rely on others. People who have their own goals. Therefore, the interests of the politician rely on the people around him, and their interests rely on the politician.
That is a world in itself.
The professional career politician, whose entire life and success is dependent on the favours of voters, will want to occupy his or her own position in that world, and keep it. Only a few stay loyal to the ideals they started out with; most quite quickly succumb to self-interest and their place under the sun.
That moment is when the game starts – and when the informed observer must take notice.
