Consider the dire predicament of the US economy. For all the laughter about ‘ old and dead Europe’ , however true such criticism about the Old Continent may be, the United States seem to be in even bigger trouble.

The US economy is between a rock and a hard place. Consumers and companies aren’t spending money, as they simply have little money to spend now that the credit waterfall has – quite rightly – changed into a mere drizzle. Relying on consumer spending therefore won’t cut it. The economy is thus not aided by domestic demand; that’s the rock.

The second pillar  that normally supports a recovery is the exports economy – but alas, the US still imports many more goods and services than it exports elsewhere. The US trade deficit is enormous. This trade deficit is the hard place.

Unable to lean on either domestic support or exports, little else but massive government spending is available as the sole option to keep the economy going. Money simply has to come from somewhere. Aside from providing a pillow to allow a soft landing after a crisis, government spending – in a Keynesian way of thinking – ordinarily also pushes investments, which in turn creates money, which then creates demand, and which then gets the wheels of the economy spinning on its own.

The problem with the US economy is that the wheels are old and rusty. They were never replaced with light and shiny new ones. Whatever the US is manufacturing simply isn’t in demand, and even if there is such a high-demand product, such as the iPhone 4 or a computer operating system like Windows 7, it is manufactured, assembled  or massively multiplied outside of the United States, thus not resulting in jobs that provide many Americans with money to spend.

The simple truth is that the base of the US economy never really moved with the times, and neither politicians or voters cared. The best (or worst?) examples are the US automobile companies. Only after they were faced with annihilation and ultimately saved by the Obama administration did companies like General Motors and Ford realize that they had to change their ways. The car industry is now leaner than ever while innovation levels are top-notch. Those companies are willing to take risks again because they understand that they must be at the forefront, outpacing the competition.

The problem with the stimulus isn’t the stimulus. President Obama is probably right when he says that the country would have been worse off if it hadn’t been for the stimulus that kept jobs from being destroyed. But given the state of the US economy, which is still largely based on an outdated manufacturing model in many sectors, the stimulus didn’t do much else but keep large parts of a dying economic infrastructure from collapsing completely.

What is needed is for the US economy to partly reinvent itself, like the automobile companies did. Obama knows this. During the presidential election campaign of 2008 he repeatedly said that the United States should try to take the lead in certain economic sectors, such as inventing environmentally friendly products and new concepts for alternative energy sources. Obama let the world know that he understood that the US had to move into new and different directions in order to once again take the lead in new economic sectors, even creating them if necessary.

Economists like Meltzer criticize Obama for just keeping the patient alive. That’s the wrong line of attack. What Obama should be criticized for is that he isn’t teaching the patient how to get up and walk, even though he promised he would.

On the other hand: the guy has been in office for only 1,5 years while he’s had to deal with an economy where time has stood still for ages in some places. Cut him some slack. Aside from that, showing the economy ways to get its mojo back requires more government intervention, such as guidance, which is what many economists in the US (like Meltzer) don’t like.

But those are new rocks and hard places. Let’s give Obama a chance to deal with the current ones first.

Het komt overeen met het standpunt van de fractie van de Partij van de Arbeid in de Tweede Kamer. Die heeft herhaaldelijk laten weten dat verleninging van wat  voor missie dan ook in de provincie Uruzgan onbespreekbaar is. Tegelijkertijd heeft de PvdA niet net zo stellig een kleinere missie in een ander deel van Afghanistan afgewezen. Daar zit dus ruimte, en de hoestende man in de parkeergarage laat er geen twijfel over bestaan dat de militaire staf al met de eerste voorbereidingen bezig is voor een kleinere deployment in het noorden van Afghanistan.

Daar zitten momenteel de Duitsers met meer dan 4.000 troepen. Vermoedelijk zullen Nederlandse troepen onder Duits bevel komen te vallen. Er zal ingetrokken worden bij Duitse troepen, in een Duits kamp, of de Duitsers zullen een al bestaand kleiner kamp verlaten en openstellen voor de Nederlanders.

Niet dat zoiets een gratis overeenkomst is. Integendeel. Kamp Holland in Uruzgan zal nu waarschijnlijk niet helemaal afgebroken gaan worden – als men een koper kan vinden. Jawel, vastgoed-deals tussen aan de strijd  deelnemende landen  in het door oorlog verscheurde Afghanistan, het schijnt de normaalste zaak van de wereld te zijn.

Er is een mogelijkheid dat er een ruil plaats zal vinden: Duitse troepen naar Kamp Holland, en Nederlandse troepen naar een leeg Duits kamp. Maar dat is speculatie. Vooralsnog wordt in ieder geval rekening gehouden met een langere aanwezigheid van Nederlandse troepen, dit keer in het noorden van Afghanistan.

Dat is niet zonder gevaren. Nederland telt 21 doden, de Duitsers raakten tot nu toe 34 soldaten kwijt. De Duitsers zitten dan wel met twee keer zoveel militairen in het noorden van Afghanistan, zelfs de statistisch meevallende cijfers (afgezet tegen het aantal Nederlandse doden) geven aan dat dit deel van het land niet bepaald veilig is.

Het moest het ‘Feest van Zita Swoon’ zijn, zo stond op de poster. Maar het optreden in Paradiso gaat waarschijnlijk de geschiedenisboekjes in als één van de slechtste uit de roemrijke geschiedenis van de band rond frontman Stef Kamil Carlens. Het ‘feest’ deed eerder denken aan een afscheid van een band die weet dat het hoogtepunt verleden tijd is.

Want het wilde allemaal niet lukken in de Amsterdamse poptempel. Dat was aan van alles te merken, in het bijzonder aan Stef Kamil Carlens zelf. De dirigent, de muziekschrijver, de creatieveling, het podiumdier moest alle zeilen bijzetten om het publiek in trance te brengen. Maar dat lukte slechts sporadisch, om niet te zeggen: precies twee keer.

Spinvis
De eerste keer was toen Erik de Jong, a.k.a. de Nederlandse artiest Spinvis, het podium betrad en een deuntje meespeelde met Zita Swoon. Stef Kamil Carlens had voor de gelegenheid het Zita Swoon-nummr ‘I feel alive in the city’ gemashed met het nummer ‘Bagagedrager’ van Spinvis. Dat werkte wonderwel, maar het succes kwam vooral op het conto van Spinvis. De tweede keer was tijdens ‘Moving through life as prey’, het enige nummer dat Zita Swoon speelde als toegift.

Zita Swoon doet er goed aan even bij zinnen te komen. Bij vlagen leek de Belgische band eerder op een combo-coverband die goede Zita Swoon-nummertjes in mambostijl verhaspelde dan op het spannende, magische groepje perfect op elkaar ingespeelde musici dat bijna 15 jaar lang musici-in-spé ertoe verleidde om hun tovenaarskinderen te willen zijn.

Tom Pintens, naast Carlens de tweede man, verliet de band in 2008 en voor ondergetekende was het de eerste keer dat hij Zita Swoon zonder Pintens zag. En wat een verschil. Er staat een soort leegte op het podium en dat merkte het publiek. Slechts zelden liet het duidelijk goedkeuring merken. Pas met het aantreden van de muziekdichter Spinvis schoot er een stroomstoot door het publiek. Maar helaas, na zijn vertrek verviel Zita Swoon weer in – durf ik het te zeggen? – obligate combobandmuzak die de harten niet sneller deed kloppen.

Oud versus Nieuw Zita Swoon
De vele bandwisselingen zijn duidelijk. Zij wreken zich nu. Eigenlijk zijn alleen Stef Kamil Carlens en drummer Aarich Jespers nog over als de originele leden van het collectief dat zich bijna 15 jaar geleden de naam Zita Swoon aanmat. Dat resulteert in een absolute dirigentenrol voor Carlens, die daardoor soms minuten lang met de rug naar het publiek gedraaid stond om zijn band aanwijzingen te geven. Dat helpt de band niet bepaald in de verplichte queeste om contact te leggen met het publiek, om de energie te zenden die terug komt. Carlens merkte het waarschijnlijk zelf ook, want op de helft van de show trok hij alles uit de kast en hulde hij zich opzichtig in de mantel van showman. Dansend, rondrennend en springend beukten zijn stembanden in op de microfoon.

Ja, dat leverde energie op. Maar te veel goede Zita Swoon-nummers werden verhaspeld in de grote mambomachine die de band live geworden lijkt. Het is zeer goed denkbaar dat je als artiest na 15 jaar liedjes wel eens wat anders wilt spelen, of ze in een nieuw jasje wilt steken. Maar je moet nooit uit het oog verliezen dat veruit de meeste fans naar je komen kijken omdat je je liedjes live mooier kunt maken. Niet anders.

Sommige typische Zita Swoon-nummers werden zodanig verbasterd dat er zelfs van het refrein weinig overbleef en toehoorders aan de hand van de songteksten maar moesten ontdekken wat er eigenlijk gespeeld werd. Meezingen was er nauwelijks bij.

Thom Barman
Zelfs Thom Barman, dEUS-frontman en door Carlens gevraagd om een deuntje mee te zingen, wist geen vuur in het optreden te brengen. Het publiek glimlachte, maar ook hier werd de zaal niet afgebroken. Dat lag niet aan schavuit Barman, die met zijn bekende nonchalante bravoure en dito sigaret het schavot betrad. Het hielp niet dat het geluid van Barman’s gitaar niet verder reikte dan het podium, en de viool van dEUS-lid Klaas Janszoon tot zijn frustratie niet versterkt werd. Janszoon luchtte zijn woede door briesend als een stier op enkele pedalen te stampen en de geluidsman aan de zijkant van het podium te vervloeken terwijl Zita Swoon en Barman vergeefs hun best deden op een cover van The Velvet Undergroud.

Naast dit alles viel de saxofonist / fluitist op. Die behoort nu tot wat Carlens op Zitaswoon.com ‘Big Zita Swoon’ noemt, kennelijk zijn versie van een big band. De saxofonist verstaat zijn kunsten, maar is overbodig en slaat de plank volledig mis. Zonder dat de goede man er iets aan kan doen is hij een stoorzender die het typische geluid van Zita Swoon verbloemt, de doorgaans juist zo goed getimede stiltes in de composities dichtsmeert. Je kunt ook een muzikant teveel toevoegen aan een big band, zo bewijst Carlens.

Doek valt
De toegift na meer dan twee uur mambo-covers van Zita Swoon bestond uit ‘Moving through life as prey’. De live-versie van dit nummer is in vele gedaantes altijd beter dan de originele studioversie, en ook dit keer stelden Carlens en achtergrondzangeressen niet teleur. Ingetogen, met overgave en breekbaar. Eindelijk dook de bekende Zita Swoon-betovering op, één die in ieder geval het publiek nooit zal vervelen.

Carlens rekte het nummer door de microfoon neer te leggen en akoestisch verder te rekken. De hint kwam niet over; niemand zong mee.

Zichtbaar teleurgesteld verliet Carlens het podium van Paradiso. Kort daarna maakte iemand anders naast het podium – de manager? – een gebaar naar de techniek: een vinger die een snijdende beweging langs de keel uitbeeldde. Niet nog een toegift, het is klaar.

Inderdaad. Als Zita Swoon in Paradiso een nieuwe toetssteen neerzette voor de komende jaren, dan is het klaar.

Op 3 maart 2010 zijn er verkiezingen. Het kabinet heeft 20 commissies ambtenaren de opdracht gegeven om te kijken naar diepgaande, zelfs historische bezuinigingen die 35 miljard euro moeten opleveren. Geen enkel onderwerp is taboe. Nou ja, de hélft van de onderwerpen wordt niet uitgevoerd en is dus toch wat taboeërig. Morgen, dinsdag 15 december, presenteert het CPB zijn nieuwe raming. Er is een grote kans dat de voorspellers iets terugkomen van hun eerdere, inktzwarte scenario voor wat betreft de economische groei in 2010 en 2011.

Dat zal consequenties hebben voor de overheidsfinanciën. Die zullen er minder bekaaid uitkomen dan in de eerdere rekenmodellen. En als het begrotingsgat minder diep wordt, neemt bijna evenredig de bezuinigingsdrang af bij partijen die slecht staan in de peilingen terwijl ze afstevenen op verkiezingen.

Want reken maar dat bij zowel de PvdA als het CDA met argusogen wordt gekeken naar wat CPB-directeur Coen Teulings te berde brengt. Als de economie in ‘10 sneller aantrekt, er daardoor meer belastinginkomsten zullen zijn en de werkloosheid toch niet zo hoog wordt als eerder voorspeld, waardoor de overheidsuitgaven minder onder druk komen te staan, dan zullen CDA en PvdA minder snel hoog van de bezuinigingstoren blazen.

Reken er maar op dat heilige huisjes als de hypotheekrenteaftrek toch weer wat meer in de taboesfeer getrokken zullen worden. Al was het maar omdat de PvdA die voor huizenbezitters uit de hoogste inkomens eigenlijk al afgetopt heeft door de extra heffing op mensen met een huis van 1 miljoen euro en meer.

‘Mr Croquette’
Balkenende was an upstart member of the Christian Democrats, the CDA, in Parliament. He rose to prominence during the 8 years of opposition in Parliament, when a parade of CDA leaders came and went – including Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, who later went on to become Secretary General of NATO. Balkenende was hoisted on the leadership shield after De Hoop Scheffer’s chaotic departure after yet another lost election for the CDA.

Before that, Balkenende was known as ‘Mr Croquette’. He had been a local city councilman and the only thing he was renowned for, if you can call it that, was the local ‘Croquette Act’ of the Amstelveen City Council. (Amstelveen being a separate municipality close to Amsterdam.) Thanks to this ‘act’, the City Council were given croquettes to eat every Friday, as a sort of treat.

Rising to prominence
Upon becoming MP, he was a true backbencher. As the CDA is an alliance of Protestants and Catholics, and since Balkenende is a pragmatist, he was elected to become the political leader of the CDA over other, more outspoken candidates. He was given a smart spin doctor, Jack de Vries, as his sidekick and assistant.

When the elections of 2002 came, Balkenende cut a deal with the then hugely popular political rebel Pim Fortuyn. They essentially signed a truce; Balkenende would not attack Fortuyn and vice versa during the campaign, and they would then form the new government after the elections. This worked out – the CDA won and Fortun’s party jumped from 0 to 24 seats in Parliament. Fortuyn had been killed by then, and Balkenende formed his first coalition government with Fortuyn’s party and the market liberals, the VVD.

His first government lasted exactly 3 months.

Internal strife within Fortuyn’s party led to chaos in the entire government. All this time, Balkenende was unable to control it. His spin doctor, Jack de Vries, assigned himself to the post of ‘special advisor’ to Fortuyn’s party – unheard of in Parliamentary history. But to no avail: Balkenende’s lacking leadership qualities resulted in the market liberals pulling the plug.

Then came elections. The Social Democrats, who lost the 2002 elections, made a strong come-back only a year later, regaining the 20 seats they had lost earlier. The CDA lost 2 seats. But even with the Social Democrats winning the elections, Balkenende refused to form a centrist government with them and instead formed one with the market liberals and the social liberals of D66.

Prone to gaffes
The reformist government became hugely impopular and Balkenende was unable to assuage the political tensions within the coalition. It lasted a little over 3 years, and it fell thanks to the personal wrongdoing of Balkenende. During a debate on a relatively unimportant, yet politically sensitive immigration issue which lasted for 12 straight hours, he – at the end of it – made a gaffe. He admitted having done something after first denying it for 11 hours.

So he had lied to Parliament, politically speaking a mortal sin. The social liberals were furious and left the government. He led a third coalition government, essentially a caretaker Cabinet, consisting of his CDA and the VVD, until the elections – but even then he managed to infuriate his only remaining coalition party. Ministers of that party wanted to resign, even though that was technically impossible as the Cabinet they had joined already technically resigned when the CDA-VVD-D66 government fell.

Sensing the winds of change ahead of the elections, which showed the Social Democrats win on a softer approach to immigration issues, Balkenende distanced himself from the hard-right immigration policies of his remaining coalition partner, the VVD. First behind closed doors, and later in public, he made a U-turn in an attempt to influence the electorate. Needless to say, the VVD was very angry with him. The temperature at the weekly Cabinet meetings fell below zero. And Balkenende’s about-face failed miserably; voters saw through him and the CDA plummeted even further in the polls.

Palace revolution plot
It was at this time that his own party had gotten fed up with him. A coup had already been in the making when his second government unexpectedly fell and new elections had to be called. The party coup was subsequently called off by the organizers. They realized they had to work with him, there was simply no time to ditch him and organize a primary.

His cunning assistant, Jack de Vries, then basically copied the strategy Karl Rove had employed during the 2004 US presidential elections, and it worked. By constantly attacking the Social Democratic leader of the opposition – current finance minister Wouter Bos – on a personal level, Balkenende secured a Pyrrhic victory. His party lost seats, but nevertheless remained the biggest party in Parliament. He formed a government with the Social Democrats and a fringe, fundamentalist Christian party.

In general, a majority of the Dutch view him as a very weak leader. Opinion polls invariably point his out. Again his CDA is riding all-time lows in the polls. Not three months ago did rumours of another coup plot within the CDA resurface.

Politicians who have worked with him are not impressed by his communication skills. And above all, his peers claim: he cares too much about petty politics. Nearly every issue is weighed on the question: ‘will this aid the opposition or not?’, regardless of the merits of the discussion or the arguments. He is regarded as outright clumsy and very reliant on his able assistants. His latest is Christian Schrover. You might have seen him, he is a longish man, sleek hair, rounded glasses, always bending over to check what Balkenende says to journalists. Even now, after 7 years in government, his assistants still need to help him say the right things.

The likely explosive Iraq inquiry
On top of all this, there is currently an official inquiry underway into the political support Balkenende and his government gave to the invasion of Iraq by the American alliance in 2003. The Netherlands was also part of the ‘Coalition of the Willing’ of George W. Bush. Leaked information from the intelligence community thus far points to two, politically sensitive matters:

1. The National Intelligence Service, which was to independently assess whether Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction, relied almost completely on US intelligence received from the American administration and through London.
2. Even with this information, which we now know was one-sided and possibly deliberately tainted, the NIS in its final assessment was not convinced that Iraq had WMD.

Yet Saddam having WMD was the public motive with which Balkenende made the Netherlands join the ‘Coalition of the Willing’. If the leaked information, spelled out in newspaper reports over the years, is correct, then this would mean that Balkenende a) lied when he said the intelligence service came to its conclusions based on independently acquired information, and b) that he willfully ignored the final assessment of the NIS in favour of political machinations. Since World War II, the Dutch government has traditionally been an ardent supporter of the ‘Washington-London axis’. (This is another reason why, to some European leaders, having a Dutch prime minister makes political sense on the diplomatic front.)

Responsibility
Mr Balkenende has through the years done everything in his power to put off the kind of inquiry taking place now. The oppositional Social Democrats made a Parliamentary investigation one of their key campaign points during the elections of 2006. Polls later showed that they won a number of seats based on this promise alone. Unfortunately, the personal attacks on the leader of the Social Democrats paid off, as said earlier, resulting in the party actually losing the election. As a result, during the coalition talks to form a new government, the Social Democrats were forced to a trade-off when Balkenende said the Parliamentary investigation had to be removed from the negotiating table. He made it a make-or-break condition and the Social Democrats caved.

I should point out that whenever Balkenende is questioned on the reasons for his support for the invasion, he has changed tack in a ‘1984′ -ish way. Balkenende these days says that the main reason for invading Iraq was always a humanitarian one, to cause the downfall of a brutal dictator. Now that no WMD were found in Iraq, the WMD-motivation is suddenly no longer important. ‘Oceania is at war with Eurasia. Oceania has always been at war with Eurasia.’ Even though, of course, Oceania was at war with Eastasia until yesterday.

However, at the end of 2008 a slew of new information leaks from the intelligence community and damning press reports causing public outcry finally pushed Balkenende into appointing an independent inquiry commission, headed by a former judge. But to this day he still refuses to allow a Parliamentary investigation, which would see people testify under oath, live on television. It is widely assumed in political circles that the results of the inquiry will show that Balkenende personally pushed his coalition government into supporting the Coalition of the Willing, and then lying about the reasoning why later on.

Backchannel trade-off
Anonymous sources in press reports over the years have pointed to the suddenly strong American support for a Dutch candidate to become the Secretary General for NATO, following Balkenende’s decision to join the Coalition of the Willing. Yes, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, Foreign Minister in the first Cabinet of Balkenende and Balkenende’s predecessor as political leader of the CDA. De Hoop Scheffer was appointed to his NATO position in December of 2003, seven months after the Iraq invasion.

There is a sense of nervousness within his own party about the outcome of the inquiry, which could well spell the political end of Balkenende.

Because of this, and the impopularity of Balkenende among the general public at this point, his own CDA would much rather see him go to Brussels as soon as possible, before the inquiry publishes its report – which is conveniently to happen in November or December, or weeks after the EU decides on its new president.

Conclusion: in the interest of the EU, say ‘No’ to Balkenende
I am Dutch, and I should therefore be proud that a Dutchman is running to become the first EU president. But I am also a European and I don’t want to see the EU damaged. Balkenende is a one man disaster area and he will be taking with him severe problems to Brussels, which will no doubt embarrass the European Union. Politically speaking the man is simply ‘damaged goods,’ but I’m not sure whether his European colleagues know this. Considering their support for his candidacy these past days, I’m afraid they don’t.

|Wouter Bos is losgeslagen. De politiek leider van de Partij van de Arbeid vindt dat je met 13 zetels in de peilingen niets meer te verliezen hebt, en hij doet de vlucht naar voren. Nu gaat hij van de PvdA zijn partij maken, met zijn visie. Proberen Wim Kok na te doen. De radeloze Tweede Kamerfractie sluit – voorlopig – de rijen en steunt hem. Zelfs Mariëtte Hamer, ooit mordicus tegen het verhogen van de AOW-leeftijd naar 67 jaar, steunt nu het mede door haarzelf uitonderhandelde resultaat.

|”Kom maar op”, zei een drieste Bos toen hij geconfronteerd werd met uitspraken van rebellerende partijleden die vinden dat de PvdA niet in moet stemmen met de verhoging van de AOW-leeftijd. De partij moet desnoods uit het kabinet stappen, vindt onder andere voormalig Kamerlid Arie de Jong. Maar daar wil Bos niets van weten.

Bos is van twee dingen overtuigd, en één ding is hij spuugzat. Zijn overtuigingen:  Ten eerste denkt hij dat hij op Wim Kokiaanse wijze de PvdA naar een comeback kan leiden. Ten tweede denkt hij dat hij veel, nu gedesillusioneerde kiezers op persoonlijke titel weer terug kan krijgen, omdat die kiezers toch sympathie voor hem koesteren, en voor hem open staan.

Wat hij spuug- en spuugzat is: de grote groep norse oude blanke mannen in de PvdA die steevast met hun armen over elkaar zitten en overal “njet!” op zeggen. Als hij die oude garde kwijt kan raken, en zijn jongere vleugel binnen de PvdA van dat blok aan het been kan verlossen, zal hij die kans met beide handen aangrijpen. Dan maar wat minder leden en zetels, lijkt hij te denken.

Bos lijkt daarmee een aanhanger van Josef Schumpeter, de Oostenrijkse econoom die beroemd werd om zijn ‘creative destruction’-these, die stelt dat het ‘oude’ altijd vernietigd wordt door het ‘nieuwe’, en uiteindelijk de plaats van het ‘oude’ inneemt. Waarna hetzelfde proces weer van voren af aan begint.

Misschien heeft Bos gelijk. De PvdA zit al op een dieptepunt, en dus is nu het moment om de leiderschapsfakkel ferm op te pakken en de weg voorwaarts te leiden. Maar dan wel op zijn voorwaarden.

Puur electoraal gezien is het geen slechte keuze. Een kiezerspotentieel van om en nabij de 20 zetels caramboleert de afgelopen jaren steevast tussen Groenlinks, PvdA en D66. Nu dan schieten die overstappers massaal door naar D66. Het feit dat D66 een sociaal-economisch programma heeft dat de VVD bijkans rechts inhaalt, lijkt die kiezers niet te deren. Het is daarom zeer waarschijnlijk dat de meeste kiezers uit die groep vooral om sociaal-culturele redenen op D66 stemmen: om Alexander Pechtold, de Slachter van Wilders.

Maar die mensen gaan in ieder geval niet naar de SP, of althans bijna niet. Dat maakt die kiezers tot doelwit.

Timing
De vraag is alleen of Bos de kans krijgt. Want er komt veel op de PvdA af. Nu al bijten in heel Nederland lokale PvdA-bestuurders nerveus op hun nagels met iedere peiling die een nieuw dieptepunt aankondigt. Zelfs in Amsterdam is een college zonder PvdA na de volgende verkiezingen niet meer denkbeeldig. Volgens de laatste peilingen is een college met VVD, D66 en Groenlinks – als die wil – goed mogelijk. Dat zou een kleine revolutie zijn.

Dan zijn er in 2011, als het kabinet niet eerder valt, Tweede Kamerverkiezingen. Als Bos dan nog politiek leider is – er gaan geruchten dat de messen geslepen worden voor na de gemeenteraadverkiezingen – zal hij nog een reeks ingrijpende hervormingen moeten verkopen. Er zijn immers 19 ambtelijke commissies aan het werk getogen, en niets is volgens het kabinet taboe. Vervolgens maakt het kabinet in 2010 een keuze uit de bezuinigingen en hervormingen voor het begrotingsjaar 2011. Inderdaad, het verkiezingsjaar.

Bos heeft nu de verhoging van de AOW-leeftijd geslikt. Daarmee heeft hij alwéér een buiging gemaakt naar het CDA. De PvdA ging de vorige verkiezingen immers in met de belofte dat die verhoging er dit kabinet niet zou komen.

Wil Bos de kans en de tijd krijgen om een tweede Wim Kok te worden en de PvdA uit het slop te trekken, dan is het absolute noodzaak dat het bij de komende hervormingen het CDA is dat buigt.

Hoe dan ook, en of je nou een hekel aan Bos en de PvdA hebt of niet, als het Bos lukt om een tweede Lazarus te zijn, dan zal dat een comeback van epische proporties zijn.

Dat vind ik nou ook weer een beetje hard voor Europa. Zo vervelend is Brussel niet geweest, dat ze dat verdienen…
