Geert Wilders heeft als gedoogsteun-verlener in de Tweede Kamer de touwtjes in handen als het tot een minderheidskabinet komt. Dat maakt hem politiek sterk en dat is een leuk schouwspel voor de watchers van de vierkante kilometer in Den Haag. Maar eigenlijk staat Wilders helemaal niet zo sterk. De PVV is wel degelijk electoraal kwetsbaar want een herhaling van 2002-2006 ligt op de loer.

Mark Rutte wil Nederland BV saneren. Er moet 18 miljard euro aan bezuinigingen gevonden worden. In de praktijk zal het er op neer komen dat het leven duurder wordt. Consumenten zullen minder geld over houden om uit te geven, en dat terwijl de overheidsuitgaven fors omlaag gaan. De economische groei zal daarom uit de export moeten komen, vooral die naar Duitsland. De inkomsten uit de uitvoer moeten de plannen van Rutte stutten. Maar wat als die export tegenvalt?

Nu de vorming van een rechts minderheidskabinet meer dan waarschijnlijk lijkt, is ‘op links’ de vraag wie de leider van de oppositie wordt. Volgens kiezers ondervraagd door Maurice de Hond zal die strijd gaan tussen Emile Roemer van de SP en Alexander Pechtold van D66. De laatste is onwaarschijnlijk omdat verwacht wordt dat de linkse oppositie vooral stemmen zal winnen vanwege de zware sociaal-economische hervormingen die Rutte-I wil doorvoeren — hervormingen die D66 niet bepaald afwijst. Maar één ding is duidelijk: Job Cohen komt niet direct in mensen op als het gaat om wie de leider van de oppositie dient te worden. In plaats van Pechtold maakt, naast Roemer, Femke Halsema een goede kans.

“I am a British national of mixed ethnicity living in Amsterdam. We have serious social issues with Moroccan street crime here. They have no respect for the norms and values of Western culture and the crazy ones are easy converts for radical Imams. After 10 years of watching the situation deteriorate I am very happy that the voices of vulnerable people, those who are threatened by these street terrorists on a daily basis, is being heard. Even the most intelligent commentators who do not live here fail to understand how badly they behave and how much society is affected by this. They do not live up to their duties as citizens and now instead of being aided and supported by inclusive polices – which just failed – they are going to be excluded and punished. Even though it is a minority government this is the will of the people.

If the current talks succeed there will be harder laws, tougher sentencing, more powers given to the police. Then the Moroccans will riot and there will be blood on the streets. Thereafter it may escalate, with even harsher laws and further retaliation. Things will probably get worse before they get better but we will rid ourselves of the recidivists and I truly hope other European democracies take inspiration and follow suit.

Not all Muslims are bad of course, it’s just the subset that commit violence, intimidate and preach jihad but they behave so badly we must take draconian measures to preserve order in and the continuity of our societies.”

Als je na 9 juni Den Haag naderde, kon je van ver de CDA’ers alweer zien cirkelen boven het stadscentrum. Het was al lang duidelijk dat Maxime Verhagen zijn partij weer in een regering onder wilde brengen. Daarbij maakte het hem niet uit of hij de ziel van zijn partij verkocht of niet in ruil voor macht, want die ziel was de partij toch al kwijt.

Ter linkerzijde van het politieke spectrum – inclusief ongetwijfeld een minderheid CDA’ers – wordt gebeden voor het mislukken van de vorming van het rechtse minderheidskabinet. IJdele hoop, dat kabinet komt er als het aan Mark Rutte ligt. Deze kans laat hij niet aan zich voorbij gaan.

Door de stilte die Mark Rutte, Maxime Verhagen en Geert Wilders in acht nemen is het koffiedik in Den Haag uit de kast gehaald. Wat voor kabinet kunnen we verwachten?, is de grote vraag. Komt er een volledig kabinet, met alle drie de partijen, of een minderheidskabinet, met gedoogsteun van de PVV of het CDA? Leuke vragen voor aan de borreltafel, maar vrij irrelevant. Vele malen interessanter is wat er in het regeerakkoord komt te staan. Ik voorspel dat het vrij herkenbaar zal zijn, want Rutte zal grotendeels verder willen gaan waar hervormingskabinet Balkenende-II (CDA/VVD/D66) ophield.

Ja, op deze blog verschijnen vooral veel stukken over politiek en economie. Maar er mag ook wel eens iets persoonlijks op, zoals enkele foto’s van een hoogtepunt uit mijn huwelijksreis: een ballonvaart boven Toscane. Veel plezier.

“Companies are hoarding cash”, this week’s edition of The Economist writes, because they are reluctant to invest which “may have more to do with regulatory, financial and fiscal uncertainty than weak consumer demand”. In other words: companies are sitting on their money because governments are spending too much. That sounds contradictory. Companies are by and large quite happy with governments spending a lot of money, because that’s good for their business. I therefore think something else is going on. Companies are scraping in hard coin simply because they can no longer finance part of their running costs with bank credit as easily as they were able to until the credit crisis destroyed the credit market as we knew it.

“The administrati0n’s stimulus program has failed.” Thus began an op-ed by economist Allan Meltzer, of Carnegie Mellon University, in the Wall Street Journal of June 30. Yes, the gazillion dollar splurge failed – but not for the reasons Meltzer, or any other critics of Barack Obama’s administration tend to push. The stimulus bill failed because of  impossible expectations. People expected the package worth almost a trillion US dollars to kick-start the economy. That it would bring back the good ole’ times in a flash. It didn’t, it was never meant to do that, and until large chunks of the US economy are completely reinvented and reformed, it never will.
